POPULISM VS PROSPERITY:
Implications of foreign land ownership controls on New Zealand's
economic performance
Political parties of all persuasions have recently proposed policies increasing restrictions on the foreign ownership of rural land in New Zealand. While such policies would seem to have hit a popular chord with the public, the economic case for their imposition is difficult to substantiate. Does current popular support for farm land ownership restrictions echo past policies seeking explicitly to engineer an industry based upon the Arcadian ideal of a land-owning yeoman farmer? Who pays the price for making farms ‘affordable'? And what might this mean for New Zealand's economic prosperity? In this presentation Dave Heatley examines some of the economic consequences of restricting future farm purchases to New Zealanders.
Dave Heatley is a Research Fellow at the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation. His research interests include transport, information and environmental economics, and business strategies in the IT and telecommunications industries. Dave recently co-authored (with Bronwyn Howell) a research paper on the economics of New Zealand's Overseas Investment Act.
